first post analysis

i just wanted to break down timmy's first vlookups post and the artistry that envelops it. it's such a wonderful demonstration of formula construction and definition, proving that it's impossible to separate art from its time.

what i think is so brilliant about it is that it immediately begins by checking for errors. obviously, we're in a really exciting period right now as a country, and tim's manifestation of that need for analysis and change by having the fulcrum of his if-then statement be an error check is so gorgeous and evocative. the choice of the seventh row as his formula's prototype is obviously seeped in more patriotic symbolism when you consider that it's now been seven years since 9/11.

i love the fact that there's no spacing in the formula. it really speaks to the rush for change and hope that we're all feeling. the capitalization of every function and cell also adds to the sense of urgency. the lack of spacing also speaks to the author's time spent in and around the favelas of brazil, and the redefinition of home seen there in microapartments, incorporating a more personal aspect to the formula.

i could go on forever about this piece. it's just an absolutely glorious work that lends itself to overflowing praise and glowing prose.
